Avoiding disappointment = not going somewhere because you're afraid you'll go and not be able to get in
Avoiding regret = going somewhere even when it's sold out, when you're not on the list, when it's raining, when everyone has ditched you, because you really want to go, and you just have to try to get in.
If I spent my life avoiding disappointment, I would never interact with the human race. I would never buy a concert ticket for fear the show would be cancelled. (Come back, Lady GaGa!) I would never give out my phone number, even though I know they will never call.
Avoiding regret is about keeping up your end of the bargain. You do whatever is necessary and whatever is within your control. But sometimes when regret is avoided, disappointment remains...
